Resin Driveways in Cornwall: A Homeowner’s Guide

Your driveway is often the first thing people see when they arrive at your home. If it is cracked, weedy or prone to puddles, it can let a property down. That is why more homeowners across Cornwall are choosing resin driveways for a clean, modern finish that is practical too.

Cornish Building Company designs and installs resin bound driveways for homes and businesses across Cornwall from our base in Wadebridge. In this guide, we explain what a resin driveway is, why people choose one and what to expect from installation.

What Is a Resin Driveway?

A resin bound driveway is made by mixing natural stone aggregates with high-quality, UV-stable resin. The mixture is then hand laid onto a prepared base to create a smooth, strong and porous surface. Because water can drain through it, a resin bound surface allows rainwater to soak away naturally rather than sitting on top.

Resin bound systems are widely used across the UK for driveways, paths and patios thanks to their durability, appearance and low maintenance.

Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded

The two terms sound similar but are quite different:

  • Resin bound. The aggregate and resin are mixed together before laying, giving a smooth, seamless and fully permeable finish. This is the most popular choice for residential driveways and is compliant with SUDS drainage regulations.
  • Resin bonded. Resin is spread over a base and loose aggregate is scattered on top. This gives a more textured surface and is commonly used for paths, slopes and decorative areas.

We can talk you through which suits your property during a site visit.

Why Choose a Resin Driveway?

Resin driveways offer several advantages over traditional driveway materials:

  • Low maintenance. Resin surfaces need minimal upkeep and are resistant to weeds and cracking.
  • Permeable surface. The porous structure lets water drain naturally, helping to prevent standing water and puddles. In a county as wet as Cornwall, that is a real benefit.
  • Durable and long lasting. A properly installed resin driveway can last 15 to 25 years.
  • Colour that lasts. UV-stable resin helps prevent colour fading.
  • Kerb appeal. A clean, modern finish that complements the property, with a wide range of colours and finishes available.

Our Installation Process

A resin driveway is only as good as what sits underneath it. Our installation follows five stages:

  1. Site survey. We assess the existing driveway and discuss design options with you.
  2. Ground preparation. Existing surfaces are removed where needed and a suitable base is prepared. Our groundworks team handles this stage.
  3. Base installation. Typically a concrete or tarmac base is prepared for durability.
  4. Resin mixing and installation. Aggregates are mixed with UV-stable resin and hand laid evenly across the surface.
  5. Finishing and curing. The surface is smoothed and left to cure before use.

A Recent Resin Driveway in Padstow

At a property in Padstow, we delivered a complete driveway and garage transformation. The existing driveway was removed and replaced with a resin-bound surface laid over a newly constructed sub-base. A carefully selected colour was chosen to complement the property, with crisp detailing around the house and garage. The project also included new timber garage doors, composite timber cladding, a galvanised steel platform and steps, a bin store and a new cedar fence. You can see more in our projects section.

Common Questions About Resin Driveways

How long does a resin driveway last? Most resin driveways last between 15 and 25 years when properly installed.

Are resin driveways slippery? No. Resin surfaces include textured aggregate, which provides natural grip.

Can resin go over my existing driveway? In some cases, yes. Resin can sometimes be installed over existing concrete or tarmac bases, depending on their condition. We will check this during the survey.

How soon can I use it? Typically after around 24 hours for foot traffic and 48 hours for vehicles.

Is it just for driveways? No. Resin also works well for paths and patios, and we install resin surfaces for commercial settings such as car parks, walkways, entrances and hospitality venues. See our commercial building services.

Planning a Wider Project?

A new driveway often goes hand in hand with other work, such as an extension, a garage upgrade or landscaping. If you are planning a home extension or renovation, it can make sense to plan the driveway at the same time. Browse everything we offer on our all services page.
