Bespoke garden saunas designed and built on your own plot — cedar-lined, properly insulated and finished to the same standard as our new builds and extensions.
Outdoor Saunas in Cornwall
After a cold-water swim, a coastal walk or a day's work, a sauna at the bottom of the garden is hard to beat. Cornish Building Company designs and builds bespoke outdoor saunas on your own plot: cedar-lined, properly insulated and finished to the same standard as our new builds and extensions.
A sauna is a demanding building. It runs at high temperatures and high humidity, then sits cold and damp between sessions, often in exposed coastal weather. Getting the structure, insulation, vapour control and ventilation right is what makes the difference between a sauna that lasts and one that fails.
What's Included
- Site visit and design. We talk through how many people will use it, whether you want a changing area, shower or covered seating outside, and where it should sit.
- Base and groundworks. A stable, well-drained base from our groundworks team.
- Insulated structure. Walls and roof insulated and detailed to hold heat and manage moisture.
- Cedar interior. Cedar linings and benches laid out for comfortable seating and good heat circulation.
- Heater provision. We build around the electric or wood-fired heater you choose, with the clearances, flue or electrical supply it needs.
- Ventilation. Air supply and extract positioned so the room heats evenly and dries out after use.
- External finish. Cladding, roofing, doors and glazing that suit your garden and stand up to Cornish weather.
Design Considerations
Electric or wood-fired. Electric heaters are convenient and controllable; wood-fired heaters suit some sites and tastes. Each has different supply, flue and clearance requirements, which we plan at design stage.
Size. We size the room for the number of users, since larger rooms take longer to heat.
Moisture control. Correct vapour control, ventilation and drainage protect the structure. This is where good building matters most.
Changing and shower space. A small changing room or outdoor shower makes the sauna far more usable, and can share the same building.
Exposure. Coastal sites see salt air and wind-driven rain, so materials and details are chosen accordingly.
Planning and Building Control. Requirements vary with size, siting and heater type. We can advise on whether planning or Building Control may apply.
A sauna pairs well with a home gym or garden office. We can design a garden building that combines spaces.

Outdoor Sauna FAQs
Electric or wood-fired: which is better? Both work well. Electric is simple to control; wood-fired gives a traditional feel. We will talk through the practical differences for your site.
What base does an outdoor sauna need? A level, stable and well-drained base. We assess the ground and recommend a suitable foundation.
Can you add a shower or changing room? Yes. We can design a changing area, shower or covered seating as part of the same building.
Will an outdoor sauna cope with Cornish weather? Yes, when it is built properly. We insulate, ventilate and detail the building to handle both the heat inside and the weather outside.
Do I need planning permission for a garden sauna? It depends on the size, position and heater type. We can advise on whether planning or Building Control may apply.
